Acceptance
The root of what makes life bearable is acceptance of the way things are. This does not mean giving up or giving in to the way things are. It means accepting how things are and then visualizing--based on reality of how things are--how things could be and moving toward that.

Present Self versus Future Self
Anxiety and stress can be exacerbated by the percieved difference between who one is now and who one hopes to be. Children suffer the same stress. They have hopes and desires which are often completely outside of the child's control in terms of whether the child can even work toward accomplishing that future self.
